Interviews
It doesn’t matter what type of job you are applying for or a what level you are almost certain to have a least one interview so preparing properly is a must. Find out whether the interview will be formal,informal, panel or group and ask if any testing or assessment activities will also take place.
When you confirm that you can attend the interview ask for a copy of the job description and competencies required if you haven’t already received them. These will be invaluable in matching your skills and experience to the role.
Also take time to properly research the company and find out as much as you can. Their website and company literature will be a very good places to start.
The interview is also your opportunity to find out more about them. Prepare a list if questions if there is any information you need to know from them.
Interview Tips
- Check the location, route, car parking etc. in advance.
- Arrive on time or a few minutes early.
- Choose smart comfortable clothing appropriate to the job.
- Be friendly and polite to security and reception staff.
- When waiting read any company literature or information available.
- Enter the room confidently and smile.
- Say good morning / afternoon, shake hands firmly and make eye contact.
- Take pre prepared notes but ask if you can use them and don’t read them verbatim
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A CV is a marketing document about yourself and it is extremely important as it contains all the information about you in an easy to understand format for the reader to use. The aim of this document is to enable you to secure an interview.
A CV gives a summary of your career and experience enabling a potential employers to view a summary of your previous work experience. In an interview you will get the opportunity to speak in more length about your skills and experience
There is no one set format for a CV but the most common types are
- Chronological
- Functional
- Targeted
- Career Summary
The content can also vary but a good CV should be concise, factual, accurate and relevant.
Assessment and Development Centres
Assessment centres are a very fast growing selection method. They may appear to be a lot to put yourself through but it does give you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and helps potential employers recruit the best person. They are all different but will include a mix of the following.

Personality Profile Tests
A personality profile test is a short set of questions that you are asked about yourself.
